“Mum,” Isla said slowly as they headed to the bus stop.

Mum sighed. “I recognize that voice.”

“I can’t bear to see Oliver left behind. Dolly’s brilliant and she looks after the cats so well, but it’s not the same as having a real home. He’d be no trouble and I bet he’d love all the hugs and cuddles in the cat café.”

Isla waited for Mum to argue that they had no space or couldn’t take on such an old cat, but she simply said, “OK.”

Isla blinked. “We can adopt Oliver? Really?”

Mum laughed. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me lately, but yes, we can adopt him. If Dolly agrees.”

Isla grabbed Milo and they jumped up and down laughing. She couldn’t quite believe it. Not only were they keeping Dynamo, but they were getting another cat as well!

Mum grinned, then held a finger to her lips as she took out her mobile to answer a call.

Isla took Milo’s hand as she watched Mum’s face turn white.

After what seemed like forever, Mum rang off. “There’s an emergency at work,” she told them. “We need to get to Abbey Park as quickly as we can.”
